Weekly Drinks & Thinks - June 2, 2017

Every week, a majority of the DesignWorks digital team gets together on Friday morning to talk about news they found important or interesting that week, tips & tricks we think can be helpful to clients and prospects, a couple jokes, and enjoy a cup of whatever feels right for a Friday morning. We can linger on certain topics for a while, so "Drinks & Thinks" is a boiled down version for you to enjoy.

On My Mind This Week

I am constantly looking through other companies' Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn pages (that's right - I'm not scared if you know I'm creepin on you on LinkedIn). Why? I'm curious how they maintain their balance of digital presence. Is it all product, all the time? Are there remarks about Kathy Griffin and her career choices? Is it someone's birthday today? Sometimes, it's overwhelmingly obvious there's a corporate takeover with a pushed agenda. Sometimes, I can't tell if the Marketing Director forgot to switch back to his or her personal Instagram.* So what's the key to good balance? If you have a perfect universal answer with fixed ratios that are guaranteed to work, please email your resume to aaron@designworksgroup.com. If you don't have the perfect answer, keep reading.

Spoiler - there is no perfect answer. BUT - there is a good method to figure out what works for your brand, and you learned in it high school; the scientific method. The good people at Science Buddies have a great page to walk you through the scientific method, so I won't work through it here. That being said, you already do this all the time with your social media. You think something will work, so you do it. The problem, most of the time, is that changes are not consistent or made long enough to determine if it is beneficial to your page as well as there is rarely formal follow-up/evaluation on the impact it actually created. The fix is simple: be intentional!

*This will eventually happen to every digital manager in existence. I had the heart-racing moment of posting a picture of Kris Kattaan, my wife, and me on a client's Twitter. My wife instantly asked, "Why would they tag me in a post?" It was a heart-sinking moment.

To-Do: Look through the past quarter's posts on social media and categorize them into general categories (product, info about us, shared news, etc). Figure out what your ratios for each category has been and how much your page has grown in that time period. Now, work through the scientific method.

For example; I want more interaction on Facebook. I am heavily saturated in product only posts (3 product : 1 fun ratio). I think if I post more fun, personal posts that our interaction will go up. So, I am going to adjust my ratios so I am providing more value and fun for my followers (behind the scenes, birthdays, etc); moving to a 2 product : 1 fun ratio. After 2 weeks I will evaluate if the change resulted in increased interaction, as I thought it would. Based on that result, I'll develop a new hypothesis, and run another experiment.
